Lucien Wijsman an Introduction

About Lucien Wijsman

Born in the Netherlands in 1962, I entered the gaming world as a 25 year-old in 1987. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work for Holland Casinos for over 12 years. During this period I have filled almost every position one can find on the organisational chart under the Slots Department. I have grown with the company, holding the positions of Slot Attendant, Slot Shift Supervisor, Slot Manager, Assistant to the General Manager Slot Operations and Training and Quality Control Manager for the Slot Department. I was also lucky enough to be involved in the opening of new slot rooms for most of the Dutch casinos.

My first international experiences were with Holland Casinos and I was involved in Holland Casinos moving towards ISO 9000 accreditation. My role at this time involved preparing and running training programs, and it was this work that laid the foundation for what I do now.

Developing the process approach

After Holland Casinos I spent almost three years working for the German Gauselmann Group. It soon became even clearer to me that, although the size and the operating environment of slot operations in casinos might vary considerably, the core process of operating slot machines is almost identical in each casino. It was during these years that I decided to develop a stronger process approach to operating slot machines. The process approach breaks the slots process down into critical activities and tries to prove that each individual activity is under control. ‘Under control' means providing proof that each activity is being executed Efficiently, Effectively, Flexibly, with the right Capacity and with the right Capabilities of Staff.

Proven results and demonstrable revenue increases

Now that I run my own company, fleXpeQt Quality Solutions, I believe that I have proved beyond doubt that the process approach is the right approach. I advise and/or have advised more than 25 casinos - which together generate slot revenues of over 250-million Euros per year - on how to operate slot machines. Through my process approach I can demonstrate to the owners of those casinos why revenues increase and if their company goals are being met.

I use Qualigram software to link critical activities from the slot process to positions in the organisational chart of a casino. Assigning tasks and responsibilities to positions in the organizational chart, and giving the responsible positions the tools to prove that ‘his' or ‘her' critical activity is under control, are the keys to success in a growing number of casinos. Slot revenue growth percentages of hundreds of per cent are no longer an exception to the rule. Now I believe the time is right to bring these benefits within the reach of a much wider group of casino businesses.

I have therefore launched The Slot Academy, a company formed specifically to provide a Training Program for Slot Managers, Slot Shift Managers and for all those who want to learn how a proven process approach to operating slot machines is key to the success of the Slot Department.
